100 young turtles were saved
With efforts of Lithuanian Fund for Nature, Lithuanian zoological garden and staff of protected areas from Dzūkija region more than 100 young European pond turtles were saved from destruction. Conservationists collected 74 turtle eggs from unsafe places in the beginning of the summer. These clutches were laid on the sandy roads. Out of these eggs 67 turtles hatched in the zoological garden. 40 turtles hatched last year. In total in Lithuania live up to 400 turtles, therefore more than 100 hatchlings saved from destruction is a noticeable input into conservation of this species.
