Lithuania Fund for Nature is participating in international project Rehabilitation of the Baltic coastal lagoon habitat complex. There are five Baltic countries participating in this project: Estonia, Lithuania, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. The main sponsor of this project is Life - Nature fund.

The overall goal of the project is to contribute significantly to a favorable conservation status of the Baltic coastal lagoon and the surrounding habitats as well as the species characteristic to this habitat complex. Some species witch is closely connected with lagoon complex is rare and vanishing. Waders: dunlins (Calidris alpina schinzii), ruffs (Philomachus pugnax) and avocets (Recurvirostra avocetta), amphibians: Bufo viridis and Bufo calamita. More information could be found in official project web site http://www.life-baltcoast.de/ .

The main goal of the project in Lithuania is to create a favorable complex of natural habitats for rare bird species as Calidris alpina schinzii and Philomachus pugnax in Nemunas delta project area. Environmentalists in Lithuania still are missing information about the management of Calidris alpina schinzii and Philomachus pugnax habitats using the mowing and grazing practice. After the fife year period Lithuania will be able to provide useful experience in economical and nature management questions. It will serve for preparation of the best practice nature management guidance witch will show how to implement nature management activities in agricultural areas in east coast of Baltic Sea.

During the project in the territory of Lithuania meadow mowing and grazing activities will be implemented in the 90 ha of area witch is located in Nemunas Delta Region Park in Rusne Island. Partners of the project (Lithuanian part): Lithuanian Fund for Nature, Direction of Nemunas Delta Regional Park, farmer Ramunas Palekas, UNDP GEF Small grant program.
